Phantabulous but need guidance

Samsung (W4 in Canada) SGH-T679M (not sure if same as T679 & T679N)

Anyhoo, my phone is slow and full of crap. I wanted to learn Linux years ago and installed on PC but did not good with all of the conventions.


My questions for future threads:

1. Should I unlock? (border town possibly use in USA with diff sim)

2. Should I Root (after backing up which I don't know how to do yet)

3. Should I install newer than GingerBread.UGKK1
