it will be on until either those frequencies are reallocated, or until there are no working devices using it.In northern Nevada, every now and then my phone will briefly connect with a 3G network, the connection last one or two minutes at most.
The only thing I can think is it was put in place by the bureau of land management, the department of transportation or the forest service, it was set up with or eventually had solar panels installed to charge the batteries
Why is it still operating? I think it was either forgotten about or it's some back up plan. Personally I think it was forgotten about or it was put up on some mountain top and people didn't want to go remove it.
The connection is sporadic, you most certainly won't be streaming Netflix
yesWhen I was "into" 2-way radio is when I really got an understanding of "frequencies"
My radio was an AM/FM/Sideband with a Radio frequency oscillator to dial up every feak one KHz at a time. I used a frequency meter to tell me where I was at when I was off the 23/40 channels of CB band, (27 MHz) I had a radio operator in the Panama Canal Zone ask me if I knew I was on a Government frequency and I tole him yeah I know .... lol ... We talked for a few minutes every morning.
Along with all the bands assigned for usage there is polarity such as the antennas. 360° ground plane antenna and beam antennas which have a vertical side and a horizontal side.
Then things took a radical turn when the digital age came upon us ... Analog was a thing of the past. Digital brought the ability to "trunk" banks and the govt removed the cell phone banks from the 800 band and they were no longer accessible with a crystal scanner. Actually with the progression of the digital radio, the old crystal scanners became obsolete.
Used to be one could monitor police and such until they started moving the frequencies to avoid big ears ....
The city popo here have a very sophisticated radio system that does not allow outsides to hear any transmission from a police unit, the dispatchers office can be heard but car to car and car to dispatch is not accessible.
Most big cities have moved to the "trunking" systems as this allows communications between all agencies in the area.
