Phone-based voice mail app needed!

It's a year on since the original posting and I, too, find it amazing there is no 'answering machine' app to be found out there.

Here in the UK I am with provider Orange (now part of EE) because of signal issues in the area. However, they charge 36 pence everytime I dial in to voice mail. And they also charge for call forwarding (unless to another Orange number)which rules out using such services as Hullomail.

I'd even pay for such an app as clearly outlined by DarkSky.

It depends why your calls are going to voicemail. The app concept discussed here will only help if calls are ringing out or being rejected - if they are going to voicemail because you are out of coverage there's nothing an app on the phone can do.

So let's think about the use cases. You could just get an app to answer all calls regardless, but most won't want that. To record calls that are ringing but not answered you need the app to "answer" before the call times out and the phone app gives an unanswered signal to the network. That sounds doable in principle, but trickier as the phone app is already handling the call. To handle rejected calls (so when you hang up it goes to your recorder rather than the network) will require taking over the "hang up" function of the phone app. So if that's required then you want a replacement for the phone app rather than a stand-alone voicemail app.

I don't know of a replacement dialer which has this, but that's where I'd start looking.

Carriers might have to do something eventually. I just ran across a spammer who direct dialled into voice mail. The phone doesn't ring at all. You just see the missed call icon on the notification bar.

TMO admitted they knew about this spammer, but so far could do nothing. Change your number is not an option for a robodialler. If more spam like this, then carriers will have to act.

I don't know about your services there, but on TMOUS, you can get to your voicemail from the computer on the TMO website, and it doesn't cost airtime.
