Phone being outrageously slow - 1.22gb ram usage w/ no apps running

I'm trying to figure out for the life of me, why my damn phone is being so slow. I'm on version 5.1.1... should I update my phone? How can I get my phone running faster. All these apps from the app store dont help one bit. I need a permanent solution. I deleted the cache through the bios, i only have about 8 total apps but still it's lagging and I have no clue why. Please help.

EDIT: Which model S5 do you have (which carrier)

Are you using the stock launcher from Samsung?

Those "apps from the appstore" do nothing but make it worse and make the phone work harder.

I have the tmobile version but got it unlocked to use it with cricket/At&t. Stock launcher?
