Help phone can't explain where a gig of its memory went.

I have a Moto g w 8 gigs on it (although after the os and whatnot there's only 5.52 GB for me to work with). I had about 1.8 GB left the other day when I tried to download a 1.7 GB app. The download was interrupted, my phone saying there wasn't enough storage for the app. No biggie, but now my phone says that I am running out of storage, claiming I only have 150 MB left. Under the storage tab in the settings, I find that although the phone states I am running out of storage, it cannot explain where over 1.5 GB went to. Adding up the displayed storage for apps, videos, music, and so on only totals around 4 GB. Its as if the phone acts as though the app download went through without actually displaying that anywhere. Anyone have any ideas on how a discrepancy between storage used and storage accounted for could be solved?
 
Have you tried clearing caches and rebooting the phone? It might be that it has some junk left over from the interrupted download.
 
Use one of the very many cache cleaning apps in the Play Store - hopefully you can still install one (they are quite small).

You could also try clearing cache for the Play Store itself using Settings > Apps > All > Play Store. You can clear any individual app's cache using Settings > Apps, the advantage of a cache cleaner for this purpose is just doing them all at once.
