Phone display lost inactive call

Either initiating it receiving a call the screen is lost and no way to get to back until call is ended. Latest security patch did not resolve this major issue Pixel is essentially a paperweight until call ends. Any ideas to fix? Tried everything.

Fixed! Proximity sensor under camera must be unobstructed.

When using any app on my phone, I can't receive any call until I remove my battery. The screen is covered with the pop up message: 'Unfortunately your phone stopped' and when I try to press ok to shut the pop up message, my phone freezes. It starts only after I remove my battery.
