Phone for 1 month in Australia

I have a friend who's travelling to Australia for a month. She doesn't have a smart phone but would like to be able to check her email with a wireless phone during that time. Not interested in getting a contract or an expensive phone. Any suggestions?

I should mention that she's travelling from Canada.

Almost any phone nowadays can do that, even phones that aren't even smartphones. You can get cheap Android phones like the Galaxy Y and Desire C if you want an Android phone. Then you can consider the even cheaper non-smartphones with wifi and internet capabilities like the Nokia Asha series.
