what does it mean when your phone gets hot

Typically it means your battery is either charging and or discharging at a high rate. Or it may mean you left it in the sun 
My phone gets really hot when I stream music while charging with the screen on, or when using google navigation while it is charging. It doesn't get as hot either time if I don't have it charging while doing those tasks.
