Phone hangs wen I d/loaded whatsapp

Model Nokia E52 - I have had whatsapp on my phone for over a year, but when I got a notification that there was an upgrade and I tried to do so, the phone just keeps hanging.
I deleted the application and then downloaded it again but the same problem - tells me I don't have enough space, but despite deleting all my msgs and most of my photos it made no difference to the hanging problem and cannot use whatsapp at all!!
I hope you can give some advice sooooo-n!

Have you tried restoring the previous version of the app, sometimes the update can be the issue.
