Updated to 5.1 a couple of days ago. Hatig it so much. I have major problems which are frustrating.

1. WiFi Problem!
Regardless of how close I am to a WiFi router, the phone will barely connect to the network and display max of 1 signal bar. Will keep disconnecting and even the WiFi speed is super slow.

2. Battery Problem!
Using the original cable and charger which never had an issue till I updated, it will take 4-5 hours to charge the phone and without even using it much will discharge at a crazy speed. On checking battery stats, I found out that Google Play services has used 94% of the battery. That's ridiculous.

Help! How to I get rid rid of this mess? Should I roll back to 5.0.1? Hate losing all whatsapp history and other settings I'm on for about a year.

The first thing you should try is a factory reset. In my experience, 9 times out of 10, a factory reset after an OTA update will solve most problems. You can also try going into recovery and wiping cache-- that often works too. I have simply made it part of my routine to factory reset after any major OS update. Basically the OTA upgrade process is lousy at cleaning up everything, but a factory reset will.

Very useful information, thanks Hook. Perhaps an obvious question (I'm low to medium tech savvy) a factory reset will wipe all text messages and photos from phone I guess? Photos I can download onto PC, can I save texts somehow. What other stuff might I loose if I factory reset?

The main problem with the phone (which I'm assuming 5.1 is responsible for) is failure to connect automatically to WiFi networks when visiting friend's and family's homes'. It use not to be a problem, now it is. Talktalk modem at my Mother's house won't let me on at all. I've tried pressing the WPS button on the modem. It connects for a moment, then disconnects. Any ideas welcome.

Sorry, was out of town and occupied most of this past week-end.

Yes, without root, a factory reset wipes everything. There is a program called helium which claims to do a backup of most things to your PC but I've never used it. However, Android backs up some data, you can find apps that will back up SMS and apps can be reinstalled from the Play Store or wherever you got them. A bit of work to go through that again, but may be worth the effort.
