Root Phone is possessed using EasyTether

RBEmerson

Android Enthusiast
After VZW's latest update, the phone opens apps, acts as if options have been selected, and generally behaves as though demons have taken over the phone. I contacted EasyTether about this. They say "it isn't us" and "we don't understand what you mean by 'possessed'". Sigh...

Has anyone else seen this, with or without EasyTether?

And, of course, before the last update I could access the phone (to look at People, for example). Not now...

Sounds like during the update, your syatem got a little wack...
You cant blame this stuff on a tethering app and personay i tell people to stay away from them when u have a perfectly good onw in your phone to use once rooted ;)
But it sounds like you need to reflash your phone because the update didnt install correctly so... Backup eveeything thats on your internal memory and place it on your sdcard. Make sure you remember your google account and all that fun stuff and charge ypur phone to 100 percent and take a look at this thread. If you have any questions, lemme know

Um, in my experience in the IT biz, either an update goes in or it fails. Some updates have serious problems, but still go in without a hint of the "fun" to come. So, "wack"?

It's now clear that EasyTether isn't villain. In fact, this note is being posted through ET.

The phone is rooted (allow a change to accommodate a couple of oddball providers in Canada and the Bahamas). However it runs the stock ROM and will continue to do so as long as the phone is in service. That said, if there's an alternate way to tether, if the phone is rooted, I'm listening.

The rest of the phone's function works as it should and I really don't want to tamper with ROM's. After doing a couple of FDR's, for me that's the quick way to raving insanity. Pass.

Finally, I'll repeat my question:
Has anyone experienced what seems to be "demonic possession" of the phone, as apps pop open, etc. as if someone else was using the phone?

Heres the method of using the built in tether app

http://droidrazrroot.com/droid-razr...fi-tethermobile-hotspot-on-rooted-droid-razr/

I wouldnt consider rsdlite a method of installing a new roms but a refresh. Its the same method Motorola would use if you told them your phone was acting up and they said to send it to them. It formats your phone and flashs the stock image back on so if anything has gone wrong in the last, its fixed now.

Most rooted users are either running a stock modified rom or an aosp rom by now so answers may vaty to your question.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if your phone is rooted, you accepted the VZW update, and now you are having issues with ET?
Perhaps as Biotic stated, the update got "wacked"?

Doesn't accepting carriers updates break root and cause things to act funny?

And on another note, since you also mentioned you uninstalled ET, and are still having the issue, along with taking the VRZ update to me sounds like you most likely lost root and ET is not the source of the issue.

So since you took the update, you are correct most likely your phone is not rooted now ;) But understand this, we have protocols here and the staff decides where a thread goes, we are the ones that have to keep the flow of the forums and deal wit responses that don't belong in certain subforums. So don't take that personal, staff is simply doing their jobs, sorry you feel it is not justified, but until you mentioned you uninstalled ET, it still belonged in the Root section. Whether your phone is rooted or not, sometimes certain apps have issues depending if the phone is rooted or not. ;)

I'm not sure what's meant by "wacked" in this context. If the question is did something go wrong with the update, leaving the phone wacked, AFAIK the update went in as it should; no errors, no gripes, no WTF moments. If the question is did the update break something, it looks as though it has. Which is why I wanted to see if I'm the only one with this problem.

The update did break root (no real surprise there) but nothing seemed to be acting funny. I'm really kicking myself that I didn't check EasyTether at that point. Sigh... Anyway, I went through same rooting steps as before and that was it. No surprises until I tried ET.

BUT... it's now clear it's not ET's fault. See below...

COMMENT: All of the above should be out in the main RAZR MAXX area, where others can read and comment. Unfortunately, Thom saw "the R word" and moved the discussion out of sight to folks uninterested in rooting, thereby losing potentially valuable input; isn't that the point of forums? I am not amused - really not amused.

I did not uninstall ET. I disabled it by leaving the USB option in ET unchecked. At that point the ET tools on the laptop can't see ET and the phone becomes just an external data device, effectively a big USB stick. At least that's what I think happens. If anyone knows more about how ET and USB connection work, I'm listening.

I still don't know if anyone else has seen this problem in a RAZR MAXX with the full set of updates for this phone. As I mentioned elsewhere, I've found reports of "possession" (the phone acts as though someone else was using it) in other phones. The earliest message was from 2009, which suggests this problem may (or may not) be due to something in Android that can be triggered some peculiar set of circumstances. Maybe some set of apps running in the background is to blame?

Again, all of this discussion should be out where the most number of users can see it. The other accounts of "my phone acts like it's possessed" do not mention rooting. Raising the issue of "is it rooted" in passing is reasonable but otherwise it's topic drift and nothing more. The fix for topic drift is to start a new thread to address the new discussion or ignore the drift.

COMMENT: My phone is effectively box stock for 90+% of its use, with the exception of being rooted. The only reason for rooting is to deal with the fast dormancy problem caused by a very few carriers that don't support fast dormancy. The hack to suppress fast dormancy (adding three lines of code to build.prop) is in place only when the phone is tied to one of these rare carriers.

Re: moving threads, I recommend seeing what Henry David Thoreau has to say, in his book Civil Disobedience, about "the best government governs the least". Some readers may know the concept as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Then instead of saying in your thread, it has been removed as the source, simply say you disabled it. We can bicker back and forth and let's all agree to disagree and let's see if any other Max users have had this issue and if not then as I suggested try a FR and see if the problem persist. Good luck and hopefully a resolution will be found

RT(First Message):
EasyTether has been removed as the source of the problem. It happens with a non-EasyTether-capable USB connection, too
There's nothing about uninstalling ET, just not using it when doing a USB connection.

Once again, I'll ask the question I asked originally: Has anyone else seen this problem?

It appears nobody has. Past that, given the trauma of doing a FR (forget non-VZW ROM's) vs. just not using the phone apps while tethered, I'll stick with not using the apps.
