Help Phone Issues After Oreo Update

Newest software update , now UI system, and many other apps and systems closing / crashing. Seems to be caused by one app in particular. As soon as I open it stuff shuts off and crashes so fast I can't keep track of it all

hi.

need more info.

what's your carrier?
were you rooted prior to the Oreo update? did you have a beta version of Oreo update install or any other unofficial version?

yes it could be any number of things, and at best people over the internet trying to help you will only bge guessing. only you know how your phone is setup.

you can attempt a phone cache flush/reset (does not factory reset phone) by turning off the phone, then pressing bixby+vol up+ power button until splash screen comes on.

after a while the "updating android" screen (forgot the exact words) will popup.

the falling android with "x" for eyes will show up since there is no update.

leave the phone alone.....................then a screen pops up with options.

you want to clear cache.

it will clear the cache then ask if you want to reboot. do so.

the phone will restart.

if it still keeps crashing, factory reset is your best move.

Hi thanks, yes I did the clear cache already. There is an app called Uniden Siren. Allows me to listen to and control my police scanner via my phone. It was flawless until this update. I have a Verizon phone bought new from the Verizon store. Any software changes have always been OTA directly from the system update selection in the phone. My gut feeling is that the Siren App needs work due to the fact that that's the only app stirring up problems. Please let me know if there is anything in particular you would like me to include, I am NOT very phone savy.

This is a sample of how it goes

I don't think that app is compatible with Android 8.x Oreo. It crashes immediately on my Huawei Mate 10. And there's a lot of recent one star comments on Play howling about it as well
....including....
Everything was working perfectly until the Android April 2018 update, Note 8. Opening Siren now crashes all sorts of programs and apps, and eventually crashes itself. I've reached out to Uniden several times!! It's pretty horrible when a corporation doesn't even acknowledge they're customers.

Looks like it was last updated in 2016. So that's almost definitely something the developer "Uniden Corporation" needs to fix, and update their app accordingly....good luck!

Yep... I'm with Mike on this one. BTW welcome to Android Forums!

I suggest you isolate the issue to the app following these simple steps:

1. Uninstall the Uniden app.
2. Reboot the phone.
3. Check for symptoms. None? There's your culprit.
4. Go to the Uniden app on Google Play, scroll to the bottom and select "Email Developer".
5. Ask them, politely, why they abandoned the app. It's possible that it has been replaced with a better one.

I HIGHLY suspect the Uniden app as the problem, simply based on the fact that it hasn't been updated since Android Lollipop or so.

That's strang, becuase the siren app on my X4 doesn't cause a problem with my phone and the app works. Thanks for helping out guys.

While it may run well on the X4, it may be interfering with the Samsung Experience 9... which controls every aspect of the device. I'm not sure how or why: but that's why the developers are paid to develop.
Confuses me that a user installed app can make the system unstable, but that Samsung for you. :( Again, thanks for lending a hand.

John, have you looked at Broadcastify? It provides instant access to thousands of police and fire scanners, emergency responder feeds, etc. Apparently there's a free app for it as well.

www.broadcastify.com
That app is a bit different than Siren. Broadcastify lets you listen to scanners streamed by others, where the siren app lets you listen to your own scanner.

not to derail this thread, but i use scanner radio pro (listening to it now) and it uses broadcastify.

its not too hard for a non os compatible app to break something on the device when its running. the old saying "computers are dumb" applies here because the OS (oreo) is expecting certain handshakes from the app, and when the app is not doing those handshakes the system (oreo) will freeze, or do other tasks..

uniden is not the same company they used to be back in the day, and i suspect they are the culprit in not updating their app. Oreo is an entirely new beast.

other than the op, I do see one or two other reviews on the android app store complaining it broke some things....

I have a note from verizon super awesome phone updated to android 8.0. My phone have never been rooted unlocked modded etc. After my update verizon cloud fails every time to pull my contacts back so I lost those. Every time I install or uninstall or update play store apps it down loads one then stops close playstore reopen it installs then stops I have to repeat this for every app. It never auto updates them either. If I uninstall an app I get a progress notification that never finishes until I reboot my phone. Apps just close in their own often. Got tech support but it did not fix anything. I'm sure there is more but that is the main things that really bug me. I've had android phones ever since they came out with plenty of updates but this is the only update I wish I had not done. I reset my phone to delete everything still is doing it from a fresh restore. Hope there is a good update to fix this stuff.
