Its supposed to go black when you hold the phone close to your head. (The proximity sensor should turn the screen off to prevent you from pressing buttons with your ear/head) but, it should come back on after a couple of seconds if you move the phone away from your head.
Possible issues:
You are holding a finger over the proximity sensor when holding the phone (usually its on the front near the top of the phone - varies with make/model)
The proximity sensor is not working properly (You could check it with the app Sensor Sense in playstore) or has become partly blocked by a case
Solution:
You could turn off the feature
Open phone dialler
menu button
call settings
de-select auto screen off during calls
(This may vary depending on your device - I dont know what phone you have)
Thanks all. I fixed it. I had put a new screen protector on....when I decided it needed a trim...well the clear screen protector had blocked the sensor
