Help Phone lost all Desktop icons

My phone was working fine.

I got into the car and turned on the phone to get to Navigation, but my Desktop was empty. All the icons, folders and widgets had gone! (I could still access my apps from the ::: button, whatever that button is called.)

The Launcher was still fine, as were the wallpaper, Google Now, and the lock-screen widgets.

Restarting the phone didn't help.

I had to replace all of my app icons and widgets and recreate all of my Desktop folders.

It's working properly now; I restarted to make sure.

My Nexus 5 has never been rooted, and I've never changed from the stock Launcher.

Has anyone else had this experience? Where would my Desktop settings have disappeared to, and why?

Never have seen that happen. If I had to guess (and I do) it would be a launcher configuration file becoming corrupt. Was the desktop totally empty, or did it look like when you first got it with a few stock icons (it sounded like the former). If somehow data was deleted for the launcher (in settings -> apps -> all), I'm not sure which result you would get.

Was there a update for the stock launcher? There is a bug that will erase all of the short cuts when updating the stock launcher. That is one of the fixes Google is working on for the next rom update.
I use Nova so that is why I am questioning if there was a recent launcher update.

There was a recent Google search update recently (and search is tied to the stock launcher), but it didn't screw things up for my N5 (stock launcher).
I've not heard of this bug before - is there a link with more details on this?

I am not really sure what the meaning of; app shortcuts sometimes got removed from launcher after update.

My guess would be that means an app shortcut got removed from launcher when that app updated. I obviously don't know for sure.

I have read on other threads about this happening. That's not what happened to me, though.
