Phone not holding date and time

Hi, my wifes Galaxy S loses the date and time when the battery is changed, the phone is set to automatically use the carrier settings to adjust this, but never works, she has to adjust it after every battery change. I thought that even with the battery removed the phone should keep the time and date settings, it keeps the home screen and user settings. Anyone any ideas what could be causing this?
