Help Phone not joining contacts

Lurker
hi everyone,
my first post so please be gentle :)

i've just moved on from my old htc desire z to a new galaxy s3. My old HTC was brilliant in coming up with suggestions for linking contacts (e.g. facebook, google, whatsapp, linkedin, etc) that you could either approve or dismiss, it was quite user friendly. However I'm quite struggling with my galaxy as it seems to display most contacts separately for different accounts, even where the name is identical (i.e. it won't link a "Joe Bloggs" google with a "Joe Bloggs" facebooks). Oddly enough it does seem to link them fine for a handful of contact but I don't really want to have to join them all manually one by one. Can anybody help? Is there perhaps an app I can use to do this in bulk? Any advice?

Many thanks!

Mine linked all of mine automatically. How did you get the contacts onto your S3 from your Desire Z?

I did mine in this order:-

- Synced with Google on my old phone (Galaxy S2)
- synced with Google on my new phone (Galaxy S3)
- added Facebook account on S3
- added Twitter account on S3

I did the same when I switched from HTC Desire to S2 and I'm pretty sure it linked them all then too.

Have you synced contact data with your contacts in the Facebook app?

Open facebook, press menu, tap settings, then tap sync contacts.

makes no difference... still see them separately, it works if i join them manually, but they're just too many to do one by one

Do you have the same names in contacts as you do on Facebook?

I store everyone (even the mrs and family) using their full names. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

yes same names...sounds like a bug since it seems to be working for anyone else... :( is there an app i could use that would 'force' the phone to join the contacts?

I noticed this happening with only a few of the fb contacts that had different names from google, but also google when I noticed it created a new contact for minor variations in phone number like having a 1 in front of the number or not, or having it broken up with -.

All of my contacts are listed separately as well, so I have like 3 or 4 contacts for everyone, and merging one by one is so slow! Also, status updates do not appear in my contacts for everyone...only one person in my favorites shows their Facebook status updates. I can't even add Twitter updates to contacts either like HTC sense. Help anyone?

i had a similar kinda problem. turned out it was because i only had the contacts saved on my sim and not the device. ever since i saved contacts to the actual phone everything auto joined
