Phone number transfer

No, I'm not asking how to transfer them to my new phone.
I am wondering how, having bought a couple of Samsungs over the years, I suddenly get phone numbers in my contacts list of people that I haven't even though about for years.
I am now looking for an app to get rid of them, doesn't seem to easy.
 
I exported all of the Contacts to a CSV ascii text file, then I loaded that into Microsoft Excel.

That let me scan all of them easily with my big 24" monitor and PC.

I delete the rows that contained the duplicates, and old useless numbers.

Then I deleted all the contacts on the phone, and imported the CSV file back into the phone.

worked super slick. the only downside is the photos got lost.
but, I only had maybe six or so contacts with photos anyway, so no biggie.
 
Why can't you just delete the individual contacts?

The only thing to watch is that if you do it that way then if you delete too many too quickly your cloud backup (GMail account) will not remove them but will resync them. This is to protect against someone accidentally deleting their contact book and the sync them removing the backup. You can of course log into your GMail account from a browser and edit the contact list from there.

The other question is, if these are just appeared where did they come from? If you didn't store them yourself they may have been picked up from some other source, such as a social networking app.

I have over 500 contacts, and they got duplicated when I registered a new phone.
one at a time, the way a cellphone handles contact editing, uh, no thank you.
 
Thanks. it turned out that the addresses came from my Google account, which I wasn't aware of as this hadn't happened in previous Android phones I had bought. I turned off sync. with gmail on the phone, went through my Google addresses and got rid of around 400 ( a lot of them were of the king 'unsubscribe, info at, etc), turned on the sync option on the phone and rebooted. So that's ok. I found an app to delete contacts on my phone, called simple contacts, to delete some of the rubbish put on my phone by my internet supplier.
 
You should make it a habit to never, ever, add a "new Contact" to "phone".

always make it to "Google" and their contact list.
Doing so, will prevent the duplicates you experienced ( and myself a while back ) plus it adds the benefit of a new phone automatically rebuilding the contact list as soon as you register it to your Google Account.
