Help Phone self-rebooted

Whilst reading the Daily Mail online newspaper app this morning my phone screen suddenly went black without warning. Then appeared the four coloured dancing dots and the phone re-started. I did nothing to cause this, and I'm not sure whether it was the app that caused the crash or a faulty phone.

I'm sure that other users of this app are aware that the Daily Mail app is very clunky. I find that it crashes, after a varying length of time, almost every time I use it, but I have never had the phone re-boot itself like this before. Earlier this year I removed the app and re-installed in the vain hope that things would improve.

I'm hoping that the cause is the app, rather than a faulty phone, as I have thought several times that I'd like to get rid of this app. The trouble is that, despite the clunkyness (and the poor spelling of their journalists!), I like the format and the fact that readers can add comments online.

Has anyone encountered this problem? Do I ditch the app or return the phone as faulty? Any advice gratefully appreciated.

You could try uninstalling the app just for a couple of days to see if the rebooting stops. If that's not the problem, it could be battery related and you may need to replace the battery. Unless you did something recently like drop the phone, it's not as likely the phone hardware, except for maybe the battery, is at fault. :)

Personally I wouldn't be concerned about one reboot in the space of time you've owned the device, if it becomes more frequent then investigate and if it's only when using that app then there's your answer.

Reporting the phone as faulty is certainly overkill IMO.

Thank you both. I haven't dropped the phone and haven't noticed any battery problems either. I think you're right, though. I'll wait to see if it happens again and, if so, delete the Daily Mail app. There are plenty of alternatives out there and I have always thought it was particularly clunky anyway. If symptoms point to the unlikely event that the phone is failing, I still have three or four months warranty remaining.

I just wondered whether anyone had encountered similar problems, with or without the DM app.

Every smart phone i have ever owned has rebooted at least once on it's own. These things happen from time to time.

My nexus 5 has only done it once since owning it at launch. I really wouldn't worry about it, unless it happens every day or something.

.
I think it may be due to the new feature that Google have recently installed into all of their software called an "anti-bollox filter". Often activated when reading the DM :laugh:

Perfectly normal.

I've summed it up as what others above have posted.

What Google refuses to admit is it's just there to see if we're paying attention... LOL :)

Yes, I suspected it might be something to do with the app!

I know. Clunky app, poor spelling, Americanisms, 'Australianisms', in fact lots of 'isms' other than English. I fully expect it to be written in French before long. But I like the format, the number of reports and the fact that readers can comment online.

I don't have the Daily Mail app but my phone has been doing this a few times a month for around 4 months.

That's reassuring. Thank you.

I removed the Daily Mail app several days ago because I was fed up with its clunky behaviour (compared to other newspaper apps). Perhaps coincidentally, the rebooting thing doesn't seem to have happened since!

The power and value of this forum is terrific.

I didn't put two and two together until I saw this post mentioning the Daily Mail app. Sure enough I uninstalled that app and I no longer have random reboots occurring.

The good news? The usual stability is back.

The bad news? The random festivities are gone... :D
