how can i get my htc wildfire to switch on so that i can uninstall avg?

Pull the battery out to force a shutdown. Leave it out for a minute or two - sometimes this solves problems by itself.

Next thing to try is "safe mode". Reboot the phone while pressing the little round optical joypad (assuming this is the original Wildfire). I've read in one place that you press it only when "quietly brilliant" appears. In that mode it doesn't run user apps, so if a user app is the problem it may boot OK. If so, see if you can uninstall the offending app.

If you have a Wildfire S, so not optical joypad, then start it up and after the screen comes on press and hold the volume down key. I've just checked that this works on my HTC One.

If it won't boot normally after that, or you can't get into safe mode (try a couple of times), shut it down again, then reboot it while pressing the "volume down" key. This will take you into the bootloader menu, and one of the options there is recovery. Use the volume keys to highlight that, then the power button to select.

You will then be taken to a black screen with a red triangle. Then press volume up + power button and you will get the recovery menu. Try wiping the cache partition, then reboot.

If that doesn't do it, the last resort is to select factory reset from the same recovery menu. That should solve any problem due to user-installed software. Unfortunately it will erase all of your apps and data, but on an unrooted phone there aren't any other options if the previous stuff wasn't enough. Your SD card should be safe, but you may as well remove it first to be certain.

Good luck!
