Phone won't go into recovery mode

I have a huawei ascend 2 that I just got 2 weeks ago. Ever since I got it, I've been trying to root it. I was trying to install update.zip from sd card, but my phone WILL NOT go into recovery. I help volume up and power and it just boots up normally. Help me please, I really just want to get this thing rooted....

Hold down on volume up and call (leftmost button), then without letting go of them tap power. Don't let up until the white Huawei screen is gone.

I have the Huawei ascend 2 so the only hard keys on it are volume up and down and the power button....
