I have a rooted eris and want to get another phone I know I will have to pay full price for one my ? is can you switch back and forth between phones with the same phone number.

Yes, if they are both smartphones but either one not a blackberry, you can simply dial *228 and push option 1 from the phone you want to activate (your previous phone needs to be off), or if either phone is a dumb phone or blackberry, you can do it in your MyVerizon account at www.vzw.com by clicking on "activate phone."

When you dial *228 does it walk you thur setting up the phone number from one phone to the other, also do you have pay the activation fee every time.

No! There's absolutely no charge for switching phones, nor does it in any way affect your contract or upgrade elgibility.
