Photo icon in messages

I have tried looking for this answer but maybe I am worded it in such a way that is leading to no success so maybe someone on here and please help just explain this:

On the text messages, why do our profile pictures and whomever we are having a conversation with's photos appear only for some messages? What determines when they appear? I thought maybe leaving the texting app and going back but both times I tried that my photo appeared yet sometimes my photo will not appear until the next 2 or 3 messages and I am just very curious as to why.

Standard texting app.
Galaxy s9+
I honestly don't know if it always did it. I remember 3 years ago when I had Facebook the messaging app would do the same and I always wondered why only sometimes the photo appears next to the message yet sometimes it doesn't.

Facebook, the only app you would not want on your phone, because sometimes face of books does not show up any image at all, it is a strange thing to have.
