Help Photos load very slowly when connected to computer

Hi,
when I connect my S7 edge to my computer and go into the DCIM folder to move some pictures to my computer it always takes ages for them to load (both the files themselves and even more so their thumbnails). Once I click on them it also takes a while until they open.
I had the same issue with my S5. Doesn't make a difference whether the files are on the internal drive or SD card. Having a very recent phone and quite a good computer I thought I wouldn't encounter such an issue...
Is that normal? Really sucks if you want to pick some photos among hundreds.

If you're using a USB cable, are you connecting the cable directly into one of your computer's USB ports or going through a USB hub or some other indirect way (using a port in a device daisy-chained together)? Also, have you tried using a different USB cable?
Of course there's also the fact that opening something like a photo is going to be noticeably faster when it resides on your PC's SSD than when you're trying to do the same going through the USB bus. (While your PC probably has USB ver. 3 ports, your S7 Edge is USB ver. 2.) Is the delay really, really sluggish or just kinda/sorta slow?

your computer has 8 gb mb. so maybe your pc run very faster. did you use memory card reader to access your phone in pc? card reader more simple to use then usb . i think yout should use card reader.

Nope, I am plugging the cable directly into my computer. It was quite slow even when I used the USB 3 cable with my S5, which had USB 3 as well as my PC.

If I plug in my external HDD via USB 2 it's still way faster. Same goes for SD cards and USB flash drives

The delay is really sluggish. Often it doesn't load some thumbnails at all. If I give my computer a lot of time to load all the content and then scroll up or down in the DCIM folder, all the other thumbnails have not been loaded.

My S5 does this exact same thing when loading the DCIM folder. From what I've read it doesn't help to use the USB3 cable as you don't actually get a USB3 connection when doing this type of transfer. I haven't seen any difference with that cable vs. a standard USB2 cable.

OK so my previous thoughts on this are definitely not on the right track. Even USB ver. 2 transfer rates in theory should be more than adequate so something must be going on in the background that's adding a lot of overhead.

I'm just dumping a couple of suggestions at this point. Maybe try using something like 'WiFi File Transfer' and see if it gives you better viewing performance. Apps like this work over your local network and just require the app on your phone and the web browser on your computer.

Also, Google Photo functions as a photo manager on your phone but more importantly includes a backup and sync function to automatically maintain your photo archive in your Google account. Once installed on your phone and the upload of your photos is done, then all you need to do is go to https://photos.google.com on your computer and whatever is on your phone will be available there.
