i have loads of photos on my sd card but can not view them on my phone

Depending on how the photos were encoded/compressed, you might be right. Have you tried looking for them on the sd card with a file browser like X-plore or Estrongs? Most stock gallery apps look for photos in the SDcard/DCIM folder. Maybe you could try moving them to there.
