Pings

I'm trying to get my phone to only "ping" when I get a new text. I keep getting pings for unknown apps. I shut off all the notifications from FB, but still getting them from unknown apps. Do I have to go into each apps and choose "silence" in order to make sure I only get noise notifications from one place? Or is there a simpler solution? Thx.

The easiest thing to do is to assign a different sound to text messages in that app. Then all your text messages can sound completely different from anything else. This way is much easier than turning off everything else one app at a time. There are tons of free alternative sounds if you download the app Zedge. It has wallpapers, ringtones and notifications. I use many sounds from Zedge, one that announces that I have received a text message and a different one for important messages. AFAIK, you can't turn off all but one app's notifications easily. You would have turn off each app individually.

Thanks. How do you go about assigning different sounds to different apps? The only way I saw to do that was in settings, which would be for all apps.

I use an app called Textra. It's fairly simple but allows the customization that I want. Under Settings, in my app, there is a menu called Capture+_2020-05-12-10-03-36.png
Customize Notifications. In that section you can pick whatever sound you want.Capture+_2020-05-12-10-08-03.png

Most texting apps have something similar. If you tell me what app you use, I'll check it out.

So one app controls the sound for all the apps on the phone? Right now I use Messenger for my texting … and I guess I'm getting notifications from other, unknown apps on the phone as well.

The sounds your phone makes are in three categories which can be set in your phone's settings. They are Ringtones, Notifications and media. The ringtone and notification sounds can be set with your phone for all apps under the same category. You can change the sounds for individual apps within the apps themselves, most of the time. Simetimes, you have to use your phone, like in Messenger. When you say Messenger, do you mean:

If you do, you can set the sound for that app to anything you want with your phone. (This should work for almost any app)
Goto:
Settings: General: Apps & Notifications: App Info: Scroll down to Messenger and tap on it. Then tap on Chats & Calls and then Sound. Just pick from the list and tap Save on the bottom. That should do it. Good luck.

You have a system notification sound, that you set from your phone settings menu.
You'll get notifications from A LOT of different apps. You have the choice to disable their notifications either in the app itself or the app info page, in the device settings.

Personally, I hate my phone constantly beeping, or chiming, so I simply turn them off. I do allow Textra, along with voicemail notifications.

Someone, earlier, suggested Zedge for downloading different notification sounds and I use it to customize my ringtones, along with custom notifications that I use with macrodroid.
