Pixel 2: How to get content from old phone

One of the coolest features of the Pixel phones is the ability to easily transfer content from an old device. The Pixel 2 comes with an adapter in the box to make this process easy.

• Android devices can transfer apps, app data, contacts, settings, Google accounts, music, photos, and SMS.
• iOS devices can transfer iCloud events, contacts, iMessage/SMS, music, photos, and videos.

You'll be prompted to do this when you are setting up the phone for the first time.

1. Plug the old USB cable into the adapter
2. Plug the adapter into the Pixel
3. Instructions will pop up on the screen
4. Follow the steps to move your stuff

Any OTG adapter will work, but it's great that Google included one in the box. Can you use it for OTG later on?

Yes, you can. Of course I'd already bought one before I discovered there was one in the box, but hey I've got a spare .

Of course the actual transfer app didn't work on mine, resulting in my having to use a more traditional hotchpotch of means to transfer data (the Bluetooth option with the pixel didn't transfer very much). It surprised me that Google included a wired version though, since most manufacturers have had wireless setup apps for a few years, which I'd have thought was more Google's style.

Unless you are coming from a Windows phone, then you’re out of luck. And the apparent best alternative involves use a dr.fone app with a PC as an interface — except the Pixel doesn’t come with an appropriate USB cable. Nifty.
