Pixel 2 updated to Pie won't shut down

Hello
Hoping someone might know how to fix. Just updated to Android 9 and now my Pixel 2 won't shut down. I hold the power button and get 3 choices in the window: "Shutdown", "Restart", and "Screenshot". When I select "Shutdown" the screen goes dark but 10 seconds later it Powers up again. Just like a restart. I'm not tech savvy to revert to Oreo. Am I just stuck? Thanks all!

I rarely shut my phone down, but just tried it and it worked correctly. Mine's a 2 rather than a 2XL, so I don't know whether this is something other XL owners see or whether it's specific to your phone (though I've not found any other reports of this).

Does the "restart" button do what it should? Do you have any problems with touchscreen accuracy around that part of the screen? Just wondering whether anything might be making you press the reset button instead.

If everything else seems normal all I can think of is to back up and try a factory reset (a pain, but can solve odd glitches after a major update) or find some other app that can provide a shutdown button, or report it to Google and see whether they say (be warned that unless many others have reported it and it's a known problem they'll almost certainly start by suggesting a reset).

@Hadron
Yeah I wondered if I was touching the wrong button but I've done it multiple times now. No other touchscreen accuracy issues. Maybe I'll try a reset. Thanks!

Well there go my easy guesses for what might be going on here. I'm not able to reproduce this with my Pixel 2 on Android 9. Selecting Power Off from the power menu shuts down the phone and doesn't turn it back on again until I press the power button again.

You might try rebooting to the bootloader to see if it automatically boots from there (which could indicated a hardware problem with the power button). The easiest way to do this is to select the reboot option from the power menu and then hold the Volume Down button until you're greeted by a screen with an Android lying on its back. You can then release the Volume Down button, and use the volume buttons to scroll through the available options - leave it on "Start" and wait a minute or two to see if the phone boots on its own. If not, you can just tap the Power button (while "Start") is highlighted to finish booting into Android.

Let me know how it goes.

Followed the steps; which is about the limit of my technical skill. Got the Android dude getting surgery and left it on "START" for several minutes. Nothing. Hit power button to restart phone. All seemed normal. Tried to shut down phone but same problem. Restart instead of shut down. Not sure what this means

Ok all...looks like the shut down function works but only when the phone is plugged in and charging. Weird. Many thanks to everyone for taking time to help!

Okay, so testing from the bootloader confirms that it's not an issue with the power button sticking or anything like that - if that was the case then it would have continued to boot on its own without waiting for you to active the "Start" option.

I know many phones will automatically boot when power is applied but I can't remember if the Pixel 2 does that (and don't have a charger handy to test with). Like @Hadron says though I think it's even weirder that it only shuts down correctly if it is connected to a charger.

I'm going to ask around and see if any of my smart friends are able to come up with any other suggestions.
