Thanks to Android 8.0 Oreo, the Pixel 2 XL has the ability to display some apps in Picture-in-Picture mode (PiP). While the YouTube app is compatible with this feature -- allow you to play YouTube videos in the background -- it's exclusive to those who are subscribed to YouTube Red. Here's how:
  1. Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Sign in to the Google account you'd like to start your membership on.
  3. Select your profile photo > Get YouTube Red.
  4. Tap Try it free to sign up.
Once you've signed up, pressing the home button while watching a video will shrink the video down into PiP mode, allowing you move it around your screen while you open other apps and will continue playing even while the screen is off.

If you don't like PiP mode, you can turn it off by following these steps:
  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Tap on Apps & notifications
  3. Tap on Advanced
  4. Tap on Special app access
  5. Tap on Picture-in-picture
  6. Tap on YouTube
  7. Turn off Allow picture-in-picture
