I "Googled" this morning will the Google Pixel XL ever get an update with Portrait Mode in it and I got a link to download it, now I have 2 cameras in my apps. Is that "normal".

If you downloaded the Camera app from outside the Play Store it's likely that it's a modified version of the app. The modifications prevent it from installing as an update to the existing camera app so it must be installed alongside it.

I hope you got it from a reputable source.

PS: The first-gen Pixel will not get an official update to enable Portrait Mode with the rear camera as that requires special DPAF hardware that is only included in the Pixel 2 and later models.

I got it from Androidpolice.com. It's does it both with the front and back camera.

Yeah, that modified version of the Camera app forces the rear camera to use the software-only approach that's used with the Pixel 2's front camera. The results likely won't be as good as what you'd get with the depth maps generated by the DPAF hardware in the Pixel 2+ (and may not even be as good as the older Lens Blur method, which used a manual vertical motion to create a depth map), but it should be a good enough approximation as long as there is a human face in the frame for the software to key off of.
