Playing 1080p H265 .mkv videos on my OnePlus 2

Hey guys,

So I've been trying for a while tweaking the settings on mx player but no luck. The video and audio both play but the video lags behind the audio so the audio stops till the video catches up and so on there are rarely moments of smooth fps.

Video settings:
Size: 412mb
Embedded subtitles
Resolution: 1920 * 960
Encoding SW

Stream #1 (video):
codec: HEVC
Resolution: (same as above)
fps: 23.97602

Stream #2 (audio):
Codec: AAC
Sample rate: 48000hz
Channels: 5.1 channel(back)

Stream #3 (subs):
Codec: DVD subtitles


Any idea on how to play these videos?

I am on my OnePlus 2:

Snapdragon 810 octacore 1.8ghz (2.0 max)
4 GB RAM

Try VLC instead. I've had no problems playing MKV movies with that on Android devices.

I've tried VLC already, only the audio the plays while the screen is black. Even VLC in my PC couldn't play this file I had to use another player on PC

OK, something I just re-read in the title, H265, also known as HEVC. I've got a couple of MKV movies with that codec as well. And no Android device I've got can play them without stuttering, or no picture at all. Same with Win 10 tablet, Intel Atom quad-core. The only thing I have that can play them satisfactorily is a newish Macbook Air laptop with Intel Core i5. As I understand with H265 HEVC at 1080p, it does require quite a high powered CPU to play them, i.e. a lot of number crunching, basically a laptop or desktop computer.

Think the only way you'll get them to play on your OnePlus is to transcode them to something less demanding of the player, like H264, MP4. Snapdragon 810 Octa-core in a phone basically isn't powerful enough to play 1080p H265 HEVC video. That's what I did, transcoded them using Handbrake on the Macbook, they'll play on anything then.

HEVC is NOT in the supported video codec list. I wonder whether the One Plus has a HW HEVC decoder. Even if no HW codec, there may be another way to play such as transcode H.265 to H.264 MP4 for your phone. You can refer to the guide to re-encode H.265 to your Android phone.

Whether HEVC is supported by the default Android video player or hardware, it will most likely be added in the near future. In the meantime, third-party video players often include software h.265 support. I can play h.265 video on my S3 using both MX Player and VLC, but as @mikedt referred to, resolution is a factor. A 1080p res video will be pretty much unwatchable and barely runs at all but a 720p vid is fine. Scale things up on your OnePlus to account for its newer CPU/GPU and maybe that 1920x960 video was just too high, re-rip the file down to 1280 or 1080.
