Playing Carrier Leapfrog

So, I was with AT&T, but I switched to Verizon when my phone crapped out and I decided to upgrade to a smartphone. I saw my bill for the partial cycle period and the upcoming month and I'm not too happy. I still have until the 26th to switch. What really upset me was that in addition to all the normal carrier surcharges, there was $8.51 for a "business licensing surcharge". I don't see why I should have to pay for Verizon's business license -- it has nothing to do with the service they provide. And to expect me to pay $8.51 a month is insane. Especially since I know other people in the same town with Verizon who do NOT have this line item. I'm going to argue with them tomorrow, but I don't expect results. I'm seriously considering a switch to US Cellular. I just worry that if I don't like them I'll be out about $70 for restocking and activation fees (plus the $35 restocking for leaving Verizon). I hate the idea of jumping around from carrier to carrier, but I don't see why I should put up with Verizon's unreasonable surcharges.

Anyone have any thoughts on the situation? For what it's worth, I'm in Missouri.

Makes a good argument for using Google Voice. Port your cell # to Google Voice and then as you change phone to phone to phone... you can redirect your # to that new phone, or phone, or phone.
