PLEASE ANSWER, Any risk with ROMs?

Please answer me. I have a GSM Hero with the 2.1 update. My phone is rooted but I used Quickroot, Apps tell me I have Root access and market enabler works so AM I FULLY ROOTED? Also I want to know ARE THERE SERIOUSLY ANY RISKS? HAS ANYONE MESSED UP THEIR PHONE? and WILL I BE ABLE TO RESTORE MY PHONE TO REGULAR ANDROID 2.1 WITH SENSE IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG? Will all my phones data be wiped? Please answer me! Villainrom 5.5 is downloading as I write this and I was dissapointed with HTCs actual 2.1 update cause I want live wallpapers? Please tell me!
Thank you...

For starters go with VillainROM 12 it is a vast improvement over 5. (Live wallpapers work).

There is no risk to installing custom ROMs, if it messes up or isn't working correctly just re-flash it or flash another. Flashing the ROM will not effect your recovery partition.

First you should do a Nandroid backup so you can revert the phone to a previous state should you need or want.

Second you should do a full wipe before installing a new ROM. Not doing so will not harm your phone but the new ROM may not function correctly. This will mean losing all data currently on the phone (not the SDcard). You should do a Titainium Backup first so you can restore your apps (+data) after installing the new ROM.

The time when there is real risk is doing a radio upgrade. If this gets interrupted you can brick your phone. Stay away from radio updates or ROMs that include radio updates unless you have an issue with your radio that you believe an upgrade will fix.
