i have held vol up/down and power and tried to reboot from here, with and without sim and sd card. no joy.

i took a screenshot on the menu (attached) it says at the top of the screen *locked* *s-on*
i dont know what this means? does it mean android or my carrier have lock my phone?

i cant access the software on the phone at all, and it wont factory reset. all i can do is tether it to my pc, and just about get it to talk to HTC Sync Manager.

Could impact damage have caused it? I notice the big cracks in the thing. If so, professional repair required probably.

Rather like this damaged Lenovo a friend asked me to look at last year. Nothing would run, and just kept on crashing. He ended up replacing the thing in the end.

Saw this too late, but for the record "locked" refers to the bootloader being locked. That's normal and nothing to do with carrier locking, it just limits your ability to install unofficial software (unlocking the bootloader is the first step towards rooting). If you are not intending to root then the bootloader should be locked.

"S-On" means that storage security is on. This is an extra layer of protection against flashing incorrectly signed firmware, but makes very little difference unless you are into rooting and modding the phone.

Both of these are normal even in carrier-unlocked, SIM-free phones.
