Please recommend 8" Tab with 4:3 Aspect Ration

Hi all,

I have a Nexus 10, which works wonderfully. I am also somewhat invested in the Google Apps eco-system.

However, I find that reading books - particularly PDFs - are a bit of a problem primarily because of the screen orientation. The other thing is that I usually have a longish commute everyday during which time I am standing most of the time. Pulling out the N10 and holding it for long periods of time is not a very comfortable experience.

I thought about the new Nexus 7, but while much lighter, the aspect ration part of things would be the same and I think - though I have not tested it - the text size would become too small for comfort (I do have weak eyes).

Could you recommend the best 8' tab with aspect ratio of 4:3 available? My key requirements are (1) the aspect ratio for reading purposes (2) weight (3) relatively good battery life (say 6-8 hrs of constant e-reading).

This would be my dedicated e-text reader while my Nexus 10 would do all the media and web-browsing work.

Thanks in advance!

Why not purchase a lightweight dedicated e-reader and increase the text size so that it's comfortable for you. The Kindle Paperwhite is probably the best e-reader around and it's a lot cheaper than a tablet.

Wouldn't a small tablet like the Nexus 7 be better? This is why I moved away from the 10" tablets, they're not comfortable to hold and are just too big vs the screen size.

New Nexus 7 about to be released btw with thinner bezel and lots of hardware updates, you would be better off getting that.

Thanks. I looked at the Kindle, but the 6" screen is too small!!! But yes, the Paperwhite is very good!

Edit: A 8" Kindle Paperwhite would be excellent, I think!!!!

Thanks. I was thinking of the same thing, but I have not had an opportunity to see how PDFs look like on the 7" screen. Since the aspect ratio will be the same as the N10 (please correct me if I am wrong), then the outcome will be that what appears on the N10 will also appear on the N7, just smaller. This will involve zooming and scrolling - both things that I am reluctant to do when in transit.

On the whole though the N7 (2013 version) looks very good. I'm just not sure it will work well with reading PDFs.

Well I can't think of any 4:3 Android tablets so I don't think you have any other options to be honest unless you want to change to an iPad Mini.

Probably best if you give one a try somewhere and see if it works for you.

Bare in mind with on screen buttons and task bar the usable screen space is not 16:9 for your applications anyway.

I was a bit worried about that. Don't really want to venture into Apple territory. How about the Archos (ARCHOS 80 Platinum by ARCHOS

Looks ok, specs are similar to the 1st gen Nexus 7. But compared to the new Nexus 7 it's overpriced. Hopefully they will lower prices once it's released and widely available. So probably worth waiting anyway.
