Plex - Running Your Own Cloud

Tekpedia

Lurker
With all the buzz about iCloud, Skydrive, and others along with my inability to choose. I have been researching just running my own cloud when it comes to media.

Enter Plex Media Server Plex - A Complete Media Solution. Plex works on both Windows and Mac and has a really good app. Keeping this post short, Plex will allow you to access your own media server and stream, Videos, and Music to your phone. It also has a Roku app for those of you who are into IPTV. Depending on wether you are hosting on a MAC or Win machine it also has a wide selection of channels such as CNN, CNET, etc. that you can also addon. One of the features I find useful is the ability to access podcasts (Audio and Video).

Anyway, its not a point and click install but I have found the time invested in setup has been well worth it.:D

P.S. Next step is to setup an FTP Server....

Maybe you can help me. I can not get my Media published using the desktop client. This is what I get.
Publish 1 (450x274).jpg
That is with the map to 32400 checked

Publish2 (450x274).jpg
This is without a check in the map to box

Any ideas?

What do you mean by getting it published? You should be able to set up the server on your pc and point it to folders where your media are stored. If you want to access it from outside of your network, you'll have to configure your router for port forwarding.

Look at those pictures in my post. I have to click a box that says "publish server to myplex". That is what is failing and that is what I mean by Publish.

When it works, I will be able to go to MyPlex.com and it will show my Server there and then I can use the phone on 3g/4g to access my files.

I see. In that case, you'll have to log into your router and configure port forwarding. Myplex is outside of your network. It can't access your machine unless the specificied port is open and the request is forwarded to your PCs IP address.

Let me know what router you're working with and I can help you to set this up.

I do have the port forwarding set up properly. I just finished a session using TeamViewer with a person on a different forum. It seems as though my Hughes Net modem is screwing this up. The guy said my speed is to slow.

But if you want to try, let me know. OH NetGear wgr614v10 rourer and a Hughes Net 9000 modem.
And thanks.

I noticed in the pictures you posted, it said "myplex was unable to connect to your server". After your TeamViewer session, could you at least get myplex to make a connection to your server? Even with slow speeds, myplex should at least be able to form a connection, assuming you set every thing up correctly.

One other thing to consider is Windows Firewall. It might be blocking the connection.

maybe later tonight I'll post some general steps/configuration and you can see if you're missing anything.

You are right about "should be able to make a connection" regardless of speed. After a good nights rest, I see that now. I just do not know what else to do at the moment. If TeamViewer and LogMeIn can get through, then so should the other two. My problem must be with me getting out in the first place to set things up with servers in the sky.

I will review the logs to see if there is a clue.

And when will you have enough time to actually sit down and 'consume', enjoy, all this boundless choice? It's like with satellite TV: I've never understood the point of, technically, being able to watch 800 channels. Don't these people ever go to the crapper?
