This is an excellent time based game. However, you need to be aware that this game is only in beta. There are over 10 different types of buildings. There are more than 10 different types of monsters. You can also attack NPC empires throughout the world.
Be aware that this is a TIME based game, which means a lot of what you want to do will take some time. The longest I've come across was 250 hours for an upgrade, granted it was an upgrade to make buildings build and upgrade faster, but still that's a long time.
There is one developer, and one customer relations person working on this app, and updates are released regularly to include new functionality, like PvP and a market system for selling items.
Donations WILL get you further along in the game than your friends, but they are by no means needed in order to play this game well.
