Pontless IE8 Features that I Miss

I use Firefox and Thunderbird's older sibling, SeaMonkey, but I know this works in FF as well: In the URL box, type about:config. You'll now see a ton of settings/preferences/options. You can change things to your heart's content. CAREFULLY. Make note of what you're changing so you can put them back if you need to.

I have no idea offhand if the two things you miss can be set, but at the very least you'll have a glimpse at the myriad of settings you can control. :)

Wow, everything but the kitchen sink, apparently. But it looks like a good place to get myself in trouble!

Gotta say, FF/TB is wunnerful. So many things to tweak. Between Firefox, plugin-container and Thunderbird, they use more memory than my MS setup at boot, but they don’t use more and more as the day goes on. And they don’t just up and die for no reason.

Trying to figure out why I didn’t do the switch earlier, especially considering that I almost did it about three times in the last year or so.

Oh dear... Navigational Sounds, which does the magic of making IE-like sounds when opening pages, is not available on Sea Monkey. Now I have to decide if it’s really important to me and if it is, abandon the Monkey. But SM does appear to consume less RAM, and that truly is important... a conundrum.

You can disassemble its xpi file, modify its install.rdf file to include a SeaMonkey section, reassemble the xpi file, and give it a try with SM. That's how I make add-ons that no longer work with SM work with SM. :)

I'd offer to do it for you but I have no way of testing it, since I don't do window$ and it won't work on Linux.

Alternatively, you can try contacting the add-on's author and ask really nicely if they'd make a SeaMonkey version.

Wow. I got a headache just reading that. Anyway, noticing that SM’s memory was, over tome, just marginally better, I’m back to FF. It’s not a big deal to switch back and forth, just reassigning defaults and keeping track of new bookmarks and emails... so I guess I never have to decide. Appreciate your help.

In an effort to trim FF/TB memory, I tried an FF addon called Simple Mail 2.85, where email just comes up as a new FF tab, no TB required. Seems good, but after loading my selves, they don’t appear in the list or receive tests. It does send, so something was right.

I finally parked IE8 and Out Exp, and installed a modern browser, as Google has been nagging me to do. So now I’m using Firefox and Thunderbird and I see a difference for the better, the much better. But there’s two little things that Internet Explorer did that I wish I had in Firefox:

1. When I click a link, I expect to hear a sound and then another to confirm that the page is found.

2. When I open a folder in IE’s ‘Favorites’ pane, any that were already open shut automatically, like magic.

Those two things aren’t enough to make me go back, just enough to whine right here.

I would like to hear sounds when using Chrome, is there an app for that?
Yes there was. I got one.
