Help Poor to NO signal with new SGS2 Epic 4GTouch - help??

bebaios

Newbie
I am happy with my new SGS2 Epic 4G Touch in most ways, but I'm getting little to NO signal with this fancy-dancy phone! My LG Optimus (previous phone) pulled in at least 2 bars here at home, which was enough to make calls and download. I've had the SGS2 for one week and have yet to see more than one bar - if that. I can't download unless I turn on Wireless (no 3G lights to indicate it's pulling in).

Are there tips to fix this? Why would a cheaper little LG phone get better signal than this SGS2?

I haven't had any issues with signal. Are you rooted?
Some methods of root can cause loss of signal.
Otherwise, try updating your profile and prl.
If none of that works, all I can think of is to take it in.
Best of luck!

JCampbell,
Thanks for your reply. No, I'm not rooted. The phone is less than a week old, and stock. Can you tell me how to update my profile and the prl?

The signal is sub-par (compared to other top phones on sprint) on this phone, it was worse before the update. I returned my first Epic Touch back for that reason. Seems to be improved since the update. My phone isn't an issue at home now at home because I have an Air Rave, but it's connection to that is even below par. The signal issues with this phone are well documented if you search around.

heavychevy,
thanks. I just got off the phone with Sprint and they opened a ticket. I'm to take the phone to the store to possibly try another of the same unit. I cannot get 3G connection at home, at all. Can't download. I can place calls but they often drop due to signal problem. The Sprint person offered to send me the Air Rave.

With all the documented issues, is Samsung saying that a future update will resolve this problem? For such a high-featured phone, which works well otherwise, how can they NOT fix a known signal problem?

That's just it, they have "fixed" it. It used to be FAR worse. An epidemic that would drain the battery or the phone would roam in good signal strength areas etc.

Your new phone could be better, but I doubt it. It will still be worse than previous phones you've had most likely. GET THE AIR-RAVE!!!!!

I think she did put in an order for the Air Rave, which I'm told is no charge. They used to charge a monthly fee for that, I had heard.

So is there another phone that is close in features to the Touch, but offers a good signal? Or is the Touch the "cadillac" of phones and I should stick with it? I'm still within my 14 days ... It's certainly frustrating to have a phone with uber-features, but no 3G connection or signal!

I get sucky signal in my apartment and different spots in my area. I think its the concrete walls blocking out the signal. Mine will go from 1 to 4 to no bars to 3 etc. Town i get about 5 bars mostly. 3g is pretty decent around here just wish it was a 4g tower around here.

If you have the problem ONLY at home, then I'd keep the phone since they are sending you and Air-Rave. If you are in a poor sprint signal area (or raise enough hell), they give you the Air-Rave for free. However if you have this problem in other areas, and you're dropping calls when you're out and about, I'd take it back (if it were me).

I have an EVO 3D as my main phone, and it has the best signal I've ever had from any phone on Sprint. It's just as fast for my use, and the resolution difference is VERY noticeable. However it's give and take, the Epic touch screen colors are far better, the camera is far better, and it has more internal storage and plays more types of video files.
The Epic is lets say the Ferrari of phones, good looking, but plenty of kinks in the armor when it comes to practicality. For the Galaxy S is was glitches and GPS, and now for the Galaxy S2, it's poor signal strength (internet and call quality).

I love both phones. But there is the photon you could try as well.

Yeah the Epic Touch does have poor signal range. My Photon blows it out if the water when it comes to reception. I use to have to rely on an airave to get a signal inside my house. Samsung recently release a software update which improve the signal do I don't have to rely on the airave. The range is still poor compare to my Photon. It cannot hold a signal throughout my house like the Photon can.

I just researched the PHoton and reviews about its reception versus the Samsung poor reception. Strongly considering moving from the GS2 to the PHoton, because, after all, I need RECEPTION! I'm struggling with this choice ... I really like the screen, resolution, and features of the Galaxy 2. But if I can't download or have call reception, I guess that makes it just a pretty toy, huh? Disappointing! It's such a pretty phone!

Those were my thoughts exactly!!! A shame Samsung always has a little glitch (that's in a MAJOR area) that keeps their phones from being almost perfect. But like you said, without internet and talk signal, it's just a toy, which is exactly what I use it for.

I am in this same quandary. I had the Photon, got the opportunity to get a free upgrade to the Epic 4G Touch only 3 months into my contract (computer glitch at Best Buy?). The E4GT is a very pretty phone, looks very nice and does lots of things, but I have had problems with signal strength since I bought it.

I actually returned it for a new headset back in January because the GPS was so bad. Since then I have had GPS issues on the 2nd handset; was trying to get to a FUNERAL and the darn GPS wouldn't get a lock. We ended up using my BF's work phone GPS to get there, but that was very annoying!

My Photon's GPS worked like a dream, and signal strength was top notch. I don't know if it takes as good pics or plays Netflix as well as the E4GT, but if you have trouble connecting to a network what is the purpose of the phone?

i too have the isuuses with signal with my Epic 4g touch. i loose signal when at home at least once a day also i no 3data coverage. with my Evo4g i had signal and ihad 3data but it was slow. i was looking at the Photon and the Sprint said that is an ok phone the Epic is better. for them more money.i will call Sprint and complain and see what they can do.
