Do people really make their own popcorn? I thought it was something only found in movie theatres.

Don't you just listen for the popping to stop for 2-3 seconds?

That's indeed the rule, there is even a little progress bar which measures the time between pops. The tricky part is to train the neural network to correctly recognize single pops, under different conditions, different devices, etc.
