Help Popups and virus applications remain after factory reset android

markk1

Lurker
So I have an android tablet that has a bunch of popup viruses and applications that automatically install without my permission. I have done a factory reset both via settings and also via the recovery menu (doing both cache wipe and factory reset).

However when I powerup the device after doing so the chinese popups and chinese application installations still occur!

I also tried encrypting all my data before a factory reset and the damn viruses still remain. I also tried using a pin and pressing the reset button on the device and they still remain.

How can I fix this problem? Any help would be great since I am baffled with what to do from here

Thanks,

Mark

If something survives a factory reset then it's part of the ROM. There are some malware apps that can install to system (not viruses - you have to do the initial install), so if you download apps from untrustworthy sites and don't check carefully what they really are you may have picked one of these up. If so your only solution is to reflash the device's firmware (or, if you can identify them, root and remove them).

But you don't say what device it is. A cheap Chinese tablet may have the installer as part of its software (e.g. some Chinese app store).

Thanks so much for the reply. How do I go about reflashing the devices firmware? can you supply instructions on how to do so? I'm not sure what applications were installed as the tablet does not belong to me, its a friends one.

The device is an Aldi Android tablet with brand Onix (The device did not have the problematic software build in, it must have come elsewhere on the internet unfortunately).

Procedures for flashing firmware depend on the manufacturer. I've no experience with this model (never heard of it before) so would need to search the web to find out, assuming the tools and software are available at all, but I'm out tonight so won't have a chance. Best bet may be to check the manufacturer's site, see whether they have a support section.

You'll need to find software for the exact model - like all mobile OS's Android has to be built for the specific device.

I should point out that since you have a relatively unknown tablet, chances of finding the correct firmware for you to flash is very slim. One method you can try is to root it using a one-click rooting method like Kingo, then using root uninstaller to uninstall the offending apps. HOWEVER, this is risky because if you do not know what you are uninstalling or what apps are safe to install, you might end up with a relatively expensive paper weight.
