Port a number myself?

A factory reset won't dissociate your device and number.
Switch to Verizon Wireless and Keep Your Number

Are you coming from another carrier? It sounds like you just want to change the device on your existing account. If so, log onto your Verizon account and switch imei. If you can't from there, you'll have to call VZW to do it for you.

That's not porting.

What device do you have, and what are you switching to?
 
This depends on what you mean by "porting" your number. Porting your number means moving it from one carrier to another and requires action on the part of your new carrier. If you are staying on the same carrier and want to activate a different phone on your line you should be able to do as AndroidKris says.
 
I only call it "porting" as that is what the Verizon reps called it when they setup my last phone.

I am currently using an HTC Incredible. I had contemplated acquiring a different Verizon branded phone, Droid X for example, from an individual and using it in place of my Incredible. I would like to be able to change over to using this "new" phone without dealing with Verizon.

To change from one VZW 3G Android device to another VZW 3G Android device all you need to do is dial *228 select option 1 and follow the prompts. You can also do it through your My Verizon Account. But the quickest and easiest way is to call Customer service from another phone and have the MEID HEX # off the back of the phone.
 
Quickest way is *228 and go through activation. The phone will reboot and be activated. This only works with 3g phones.
 
i have a new phone a new careier and the new compeny make me hadc till thay do it i need it now is ther some app to do it my self ?
