Possible 2nd thoughts about switching to Android...

Red-Droid

Newbie
I've pre-ordered the EVO 4 already.

Then I joined the best Android forum I could find.

Now...I can't help but notice how many complaint threads there are about OS issues, apps not working, battery issues and seeing the phrase "disappointment" in thread titles of different phones.

This is not a "new guy not knowing" situation...every visit I hit New Post first, then view the different sections.

I'm giving up my Bberry Tour to get my first Android...am I the ONLY new guy noticing the frequency of problem threads?

as far as those "i'm disappointed with..." threads: the majority of those are people whining about some of the most petty things and it is just someone looking to whine about something.

let me say this. you are moving from blackberry to android. you WILL NOT be disappointed. i promise. for a company like RIM, who has been making smartphones for years and started to moving from a business only model to a more entertainment valued model almost ten years ago, Android just shows how far off RIM is.

as far as apps not working and such: think about it. a lot of the apps out there is because someone is sitting at their laptop just toying around and hoping to make a little off of donations from their handywork. there are going to be bugs, there are going to be apps that dont work. thats just the way it is.

dont worry about the decision you have made. besides you pre-ordered one of the top two phones on the market right now. some would say the best android phone available.

It very much depends on why you want to move away from Blackberry. I had years and years with BB and it's great for PIM and email but pretty poor for anything else. I looked at iPhone but (a) I don't get on well with them - had one for six months as a work phone and (b) I don't like the whole Apple business mentality.

I wanted more entertainment and "stuff" so that left Android. Overall I am not disappointed, though things like the PIM and the lack of direction that Google gives to developers and manufactures is a down. But the apps, the devices, the possibilities are far, far better than Blackberry.

So if you want great PIM and email, stick with BB. If you want everything else (and also pretty good but not perfect PIM and email) then Android is good.

Oh - battery life is rubbish on all these large screen/touch screen phones. You'll probably be charging daily - we just live with it, buy car chargers, etc.

i am looking to move from bb as well as i just dont see how you can compare the top of the line bb (9650) to the evo...i am usually not the first one to get these phones but the evo has made me crazy....the biggest complaint i hear is the additional $10 and that is ridiculous, if you have a cell phone you already pay close to $1,000 per year anyway so it is what it is..i am looking forward to getting my hands on the first android phone i have ever had

Most tech forums are only visited once people have an issue, if you don't see people posting issues I'd be even more afraid. Try reading those "dissapointment" threads (if you can stomach them), you'll see a child ranting about issues that would have been easily fixed if they had asked a few questions before making their DRAMA post.

Keep in mind that people are writing about a myriad different phones with different specs. sometimes a program that works well in one might not work as well in another. This is especially true of phones with lower hardware specs that try to run programs made for phones with higher specs. For example, I have a droid running 2.1. I can and have installed a number of live wallpapers on it. Does the droid run them? Well yes it does. Does it run them smoothly? Not so much. So long as I don't do anything the backgrounds look beautiful, but when I interact with the screen, they lag a bit to much for my liking. The same is not true of a phone with a faster processor. This doesn't mean the droid is a bad phone (exactly the opposite is true), it just means that the reality of it's specs means that it doesn't do somethings as well as others.

other things that will affect performance are what other software is running in the background (draining system resources). Also, don't forget that the Android market, despite its size, is in many ways only getting started. unlike the Apple App Store, where programs don't get uploaded until they are 100% perfect (and until apple decides that you are worthy), the android market hosts a ton of software that is either in beta stage, or released but still in constant development. Depending on what you download, your program may or may not be in the stable form you want.

Try hitting any discussion forum site. They're all full of people posting about problems. That's the nature of them.

Don't put the cart before the horse. Get your device first and then find the problems that you're having with it.

if you only read forums you'd think 90% of ANY gizmo is bad because only posters with bad issues will post. You have a 30 day trial period...i'd suggest taking advantage of it. :)

Well you know what i find funny about the post you started? you did the same exact thing, your complaining. Its like if you listen to the media you think pitbulls are the worst dogs in the world but when you been around one and experience it first hand you get to draw you own conclusion and realize their not as bad as everyone make them out to be.

I've just swapped my BB Bold for a desire running 2.1.

I would echo what was said above, The BB wins on email and IM but the desire wins on pretty much everything else.

I would not switch back now. The usability of android is something I've never experienced on a mobile before.

How can I complain about what doesn't exist. Read the tone of the thread...my Concern is about the Frequency of OS issues, I've already ordered the phone so I'm already committed , you find the complaining in my thread and let me know. Big difference in inquiry about a future purchase vs knocking a product.

If I was complaining, I'd need to physically have a device in hand and first hand knowledge...which I don't, so I ask others that DO have OS first hand knowledge.

Hopefully this makes my quest a bit more crystal to you.

Thanks for the info and those that got the gest of my quest. I can't wait till June 4th so I can blaze up my iPad with the EVO 4.

No phone is completely unproblematic. The iPhone for instance is riddled with issues. The fact is, these are forums and are usually used to ask for help with problems, so it stands to reason that you're going to see threads on such topics quite frequently. As mentioned above, most complaints are petty and often from people looking to find problems with the android platform. Many people have come from dumb phones and are not used to having to [for instance] charge their phone every day etc.

Most problems are easily dealt with and most of us here are happy to help when asked :)

You'll love your new phone... trust me! ;)
