Possible dumb question

I've been fiddling with my phone and realized that I can't lock my phone. I can "lock" the screen in many ways but none of them require my fingerprint or PIN number to turn it back on. I'm not turning the phone off, just the screen. I want to only turn the screen back on securely, with fingerprint or pin. As it stands now, just pushing the power button and/or plugging or unplugging the charging cable turns it back on. Requiring a PIN or password when turning the phone on doesn't do it either. I do have apps that keeps the screen from timing out but I turned it off and that didn't help. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Perhaps a dumber question...
How do you do that?

Every, I mean EVERY time my screen is closed, I have to re-enter my unlock pattern.

99% of the time, I'm home and would definitely like to keep the phone from locking. It's that 1% of the time that has me even having a pattern lock, at all.

And I have the exact opposite problem. No matter how I lock my screen, it opens with a push of the power button, my fingerprint or plugging or unplugging my charging cable. It won't lock. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Have you tried the Smart Lock option under security? That can keep phones from locking in different situations.

And I solved my problem with the answer I gave you. Duh!

I just thought of something. Under Smart Locks, if you add your address under location, it won't lock at home. That was why mine wouldn't lock. Make sure your address is correct and activated. If it still locks, maybe run through all the usual stuff but that should keep it from locking.

It's supposed to be set with the coordinates from the GPS.
Perhaps a reset to my GPS.
