Possible to update Next3 tablet?

Hello, my elderly mother received an old Next3 tablet from a friend.
I am wondering if it is possible to update it for web browsing. She doesn't need that much. Gmail, lottery scores, Youtube and general browsing.

Currently I am getting constant browsing errors that say something along the lines of the certificate doesn't match the website - it's old and not browsable. The rest of the tablet (books etc) appears at first glance to work correctly.

Under settings I see no update options. Here are the specs:
Android 2.1
kernel version 2.6.25
build number 1.3.23.ECLAIR.eng.root.20101208.141547

As to my level of tech ability, I have barely a passing familiarity with Android. I'm a Mac person with pretty good technical ability although I am not a programmer or anything. I am running OSX 10.8.5 on a Macbook Pro if that matters here.

If it's possible to upgrade and someone could guide me through step by step I'd be most grateful. Thank you

Possible but you will have to depend if there is a developer community for it, i highly doubt theirs one but hey you can always try to see if their is one

Thank you, can you recommend any places to start?
Isn't there some simple, hackable way to download and install an upgrade? I would think that the hardware itself would be capable of average browsing.

I'm not sure if it's Amazon or not, will look and see if I can tell. Honestly I've never even used a tablet since I live on my Macbook. So I really don't know one from the other. Other than the ipad.
