Possible to use a wireless adaptor on an android device?

Hi,

I'm trying to (For now) get a wireless adapter (specifically the ASUS WL-167G) working on an android device via USB. Is this idea even possible or is my approach at it wrong? Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

For that you need an USB with host function. But most Android devices have only USB client funktion.

I think, Android USB host and client funktion will be with Android 3.0 :)

Even if USB host work, won't you need a app to enable it? Wifi adapters are not plug and play even on Windows. You need special drivers and software to control the adapter.

I have two usb ports on my 10' tablet, I wish to use a usb wifi dongle to increase the range of my wifi.
However when plugging it in it is not recognised, yet it works ok on the PC

Any ideas how to get it recognised???

Thanks

Search in this article for 'USB On-The-Go'. And then have a look at your tab's USB ... maybe it is your solution :)

Are there Android handsets without WiFi not already built in? I guess I'm thinking plugging in a wireless adapter would be redundant and merely turning the WiFi on in settings will give you what you are looking for..

After disabling wifi on the tablet & plugging in the usb dongle it was still not recognised even after enabling wifi again.

I looked thru your welcome suggestion however could not see anything that would help.
However it maybe there a little technical for my grey matter.
All help is appreciated.
Thanks:rolleyes::rolleyes:

If your tab's USB has USB client and host mode then it has USB On-The-Go :)
You could look in your manual to be sure.

For to connect an USB client (like an USB stick) to your tab, the tab has recognize this and switch itself in USB host mode.

A method for this recognition, the client device's microUSB or miniUSB ID (pin4) has been shortend to 0V (pin5).

The answer hasn't changed since this was first posted 6 years ago. Even with OTG, which allows use of flash drives, other USB devices like WiFi adapters won't work because they require drivers that don't exist in your Android device.

If you truly have a hardware failure that breaks WiFi the best course of action is to replace the phone. Repair probably won't be cost-effective as the WiFi is most likely integrated on the main board.
