Help Power button function changed

Why does the power button now require 2 presses to unlock the touch screen? 1 turns the phone on the second allows the touchscreen to work. I did no setting changes so I have no idea how this happened or how to reverse it.

Did the device just receive an update? What android version is it on currently? What device is it? Have you tried a reboot?
Who is your carrier? Do you have any PIN/password/fingerprint unlock set up?

Dannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!
That is one interesting problem, never heard of that one. I could easily see it being tied to a custom setting of some sort (it is not a standard Android option I know of, but Kyocera or Verizon could always have created something on their own).
  • Maybe some sort of pocket mode? Does it always take 2 taps or is it only when you go to hang up on a live phone call?
Possible Pocket mode example - Power button gets bumped in a pocket/purse/holster but needs a second button press to actually unlock touch screen rest of the way, so as to prevent a possible "butt dial"?

  • Do you ever use "Daydream" or "Dock Mode"? I could see these modes possibly changing the manner in which a phone is unlocked...

  • I noticed one suspect setting in the Kyocera Brigadier Manual (.pdf)
Menu -> Settings -> Lock screen -> Select the Power key instantly locks check box

( ^ Path may have changed with software updates)
Not sure what this setting is exactly. Manual also shows the power key as "Power/Lock key". Maybe there is an underlying extra lock/unlock feature?

  • One last thing you could try is Safe Mode:

If you don't have to Double Tap while in Safe Mode, then you will know it is an application that you have added to the phone that is interfering. Once that is determined you can start to sift through all your applications that you have installed from the Play Store.

Upon looking up your device, I'm jealous of the dedicated camera button and the user programmable bonus button. I had a phone with a camera button a few years back and I really miss the convenience and functionality of it.
