Preloaded Google Maps?

I want to use my Android device as a GPS with Google Maps. The problem is however I do not always have access to a data plan without i, Google Maps is sometimes useless. Is is possible to preload the map of my city on my phone?
If not with Google Maps, what are some good alternatives?
