I have limited Android experience and always gave it a wide berth due to the malware issues. Wanting to unMac seriously, Android gurus may address my concerns as related to Windows Phone users. Android is having my attention so please see my criteria below.

Mavs, latest iTunes force me through iCloud which is seriously stupid as users in the developing world do not enjoy affordable or even availability of essential bandwidth. Basic 3G sometimes, but more likely GRPS/Edge.

2/3 of global smartphone users are being adversely affected by the brainless systems architecture and policies only suited to their needs and relevant only to a minority of privileged users.

I received an iPhone 5 as a gift. It has failed me in many ways. My needs are;

1. Full office functionality including Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint and OneNote, or similar. Apple's Notes is an amateur joke.

2. Full local sync via wireless, Bluetooth or USB. Where I live, cloud services are a NO-NO as cellular data signal coverage is in deficit. I know of Akruto and Companionlink, but is there a native app that can be doing this?

3. Excellent call quality and battery life.

4. Screen legible in bright sunlight.

5. Enough storage and/or memory card expansion slot.

6. I will get a tablet as well, so Lumia 1520 is overkill. I use my phone as a phone and not as a computer.

I am looking at Nokia and HTC but suggestions for both phone and 10" tablet most welcome. Please speak from experience as an adult business user only and kids & teens are asked not to comment as I won't be using it for social media, fun or games. Samsung and others???

Android??

The phone will need to accompany me to mining and construction sites and act as quality camera as photos will be used in business presentations.

Chinese app stores?

Speaking from experience in China, which can be very much "developing world" aka emerging market, usually those that can afford iDevices and Macs and things, can often afford a good fast broadband internet connection as well. iPhone owners as a whole tend to be quite well monied in China, especially that the 5S is equivalent of $1,000 here.

So you didn't pay full retail for yours?

I thought iWork was supposed to be the best iOS office suite there is. But then on a mobile OS you're probably not going to get full desktop MS Office features. Then even iWork on a Mac can be rather limited.

So you'll probably need something of a reasonable spec while being quite robust. I'll have to think about that. :) ...sure there's probably an Android that will fit your requirements.

It doesn't help we can afford something if it does not EXIST. We do NOT have broadband even if we can afford it. People constantly do not understand this and it freaks me out!!!!

IWork is not included and an expensive outlay due to weak loval currency vs USD.

Stop trying to tell me how hood Apple is. It isn't working as it should have.

Which country are you in, so maybe I can get a better understanding. I'm speaking from experience of China as an emerging market, where broadband is usually available, provided you're not too poor or stuck out in the boonies somewhere. ;) ...however I'm not Chinese, I only live here.

Not trying to defend Apple, and to be frank I detest Apple Inc. and their Gucci like luxury game they play in developing countries. There's some aspects of Android that might require broadband internet as well, particularly if you plan on using Google's cloud services. If you're just doing IM, email and maybe some casual browsing of mobile sites, EDGE/GPRS can be OK. But if you wish to install any apps, you could be waiting a while.

We drive to where we can get broadband when we need to, but most communications are done via SMS text or Whatsapp as both work on GRPS/Edge. I work across Africa and even the most developed cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa see unreliable connectivity from all carriers. Outside of major cities, it becomes real bad.

Syncing lots of data through the cloud is either possible or unaffordable, even to rather wealthy people. Pricing on this continent is insane and shareholders get stinking rich on the backs of really poor people.
