Prevent apps from running

I have an LG Escape 3 running Marshmallow. I use AVG Ultimate, and it kills background apps no problem, but they just load right back up. How can I stop them. I think I have too many apps running in the background and believe it's draining my battery quicker.

You may want to ditch AVG altogether.
Have you tried greenify?
You can also disable them from the app list in your phone settings menu
