Prevent Background Apps Force Closing

Alright, I've noticed recently that when running multiple apps, some of them in background, and then turning off the screen, ALL background apps will close. I'll lose whatever I was navigating on Maps, Play Music will stop, and several others that I had running will be closed. It's intermittent, and I have not been able to link it to any particular source, as there doesn't seem to be a common thread other than it only happens when I turn off the screen. RAM usage is sitting at about 75-80% as per normal, it happens whether freshly rebooted or running for days, I have no battery saver apps other than the default samsung one I'm forced to use. I only noticed this behavior recently, maybe two, three weeks ago, and BEFORE the latest T-Mobile ROM was pushed to my phone. Please help, as this is getting rather frustrating.
